Jovan Nicholson: Winifred Nicholson and Cumbrian Rag Rugs
Thu 13 March | 12:30pmCumbrian artist Winifred Nicholson first encountered rag rugs in the Cumberland of the 1920s, when, with her husband Ben Nicholson, she visited her neighbour Margaret Warwick, who was sat in her kitchen making a rug from scraps of old clothing. Winifred’s nephew, Jovan Nicholson, tells the story of how she helped revive the tradition of rag rug making in the 1960s and 1970s. Through her efforts over 180 rugs were crafted by talented local makers. Together they form an eclectic group of vibrant images with some of the finest designed by Winifred Nicholson herself.
