Robert Farrah: A Lighthouse Keeper’s Memoir
Sun 16 March | 12pmRobert moved to Cumbria in 1984 from Souter Point Lighthouse on the north-east coast, having joined the service in 1970 at the age of 19. He retired from lighthouse keeping in 1997, after 27 years of service, just a year before the completion of automation. He saw the service progress from a ‘traditional’ one with keepers to the de-manning of the lighthouses. His journals recording the keepers’ lives and the process of automation, have now been published in his book From the Lighthouse.
