Community Choir Call Out for Members for New Play, Steel
Theatre by the Lake (TBTL) will present Steel by Lee Mattinson, a brand-new play which will be performed in the TBTL Studio before embarking on a tour of the West Coast of Cumbria in October 2024. The show will feature a choir made up of local voices, who will work with a composer to co-create an original song inspired by the West Coast of Cumbria.
TBTL are looking for people to get involved in this exciting opportunity; people who enjoy singing and meeting new people, and are interested in exploring the identity of Workington, its steel heritage and life on the West Coast today.
Lee Mattinson, writer of Steel said: “Steel is a play about Workington and asks what hope looks like in a de-industrialised landscape left to rot behind the fells. It is also a play about its people – their brilliance and complexities, ambitions and insecurities. And so it if feels only right that the final moment of the show is theirs – a space in which the community choir respond to it’s central questions with a collectively written song. I already know it’s going to be the best scene.”
The choir will rehearse at The Carnegie in Workington from July to September before recording the piece that will feature in the finale of the show. They will then perform the song live as part of TBTL’s 25th Birthday Party celebrations, and for two special performances at the Carnegie on 2 and 3 November.
Rehearsals will take place on Wednesday evenings from the 3 July to 25 September.
